Richard R. Methvin was born about 1793-94 in Maryland (according to the 1850 Upshur County, Tx. census) He was deaf and a wagonmaker. His second wife was dead prior to the 1850 census, and he had the following living with him then,
M. Methvin a female age 9 born in Alabama, Margaret T. Methvin a female age 6 born in Alabama, and M. A. Riley female age 11 born in Georgia, who was probably his step-daughter.

3. ORASMUS (OSSIE) HITCH3 METHVIN (RICHARD R.2, NATHAN1) was born March 10, 1815 in Baldwin Co., Georgia, and died February 09, 1882 in Gregg Co. Tx.. He married MARGARET R. PERREAU.

The Founding of Longview, Texas
O.H. Methvin and his wife Margaret R., deeded to the Southern Pacific
Railroad Company, 100 acres of land on April 7, 1870 (deeded July 15, 1872)
for $500 in gold. Methvin built a three story house on top of Rock
Hill, which was located between what is now High Streetand Center Street.
O.H., and a railroad surveyor were sitting on Methvin's porch on Rock Hill,
when the surveyor exclaimed, "My, what a long view you have from here!"
That was the beginning of the name Longview." The street that travels
in from of the courthouse is named Methvin Street. This was sworn
to in a statement by William Wyatt Pierce, the nephew and adopted son of
O.H. and Margaret Methvin. It states:
The State of Texas, County of Gregg
Before me, the undersigned authority, on this day personally appeared William Wyatt Pierce, who being by me duly sworn on oath says: that he was born on February 24, 1868; that upon the death of his mother and father occurring when affiant was under the age of two years, that O.H. Methvin, Sr., and his wife, Margaret Methvin, reared him to manhood; that affiant often heard O.H. Methvin, Sr. say that the name of Longview was applied to the newly platted townsite from the fact that standing on rock Hill, as commonly called, a long distance view could be seen; that Rock Hill, as situated on the North boundary of the townsite, was at the time of elevation quite high above the surrounding surface of the ground.
William Wyatt Pierce. subscribed and sworn to before me at Longview, Texas, this the 9th day of september, A.D. 1942. Frank Bolton, Notary Public, Gregg County, Texas.
O.H. and wife raised his sister's children, Margaret Pierce born about 1858, George Pierce born about 1861, and William born in 1868.
